Long Night of Sciences a Great Success!

At MPG-FHI, visitors learned about catalysis and carbon dioxide adsorption on surfaces, and were shown a 360° Virtual Reality (VR) movie on electron-hole pairs (excitons) in the wide-gap material LiF using Google Cardboard-like headsets. Electron-hole pairs are key players, for instance, in solar-cell devices by interaction of the solar absorber with incoming sun light. Being 6-D objects (depending on the position of electron and hole), they are hard to grasp with conventional graphics, thus new scientific insight can be gained from using the novel VR tools.
The HUB presentation focussed on excitons in opto-electronics and solar-cell materials, making use of the 360° videos and VR demonstrations of NOMAD visualizations. HUB teamed up with two other big projects, the Collaborative Research Centre HIOS (Hybrid Organic Inorganic Systems), funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and the Innovative Training Network INFORM (Interfaces in Opto-electronic Thin Film Multilayer Devices), funded by the EU. As HIOS researchers were fascinated about the possibility to visualize excitons, HIOS sponsored the event, providing a Vive system. This allowed us to give a live demonstration of the VR tools, which was enthusiastically received by the public. INFORM sent young researchers to Berlin to support the NOMAD team with model devices to demonstrate where and how excitons are created.
